The company says they over-estimated the fuel efficiency on these cars and then reported those inflated numbers to the EPA. As for real-world figures, we managed to eke 48mpg out of the 2.0-litre 150hp diesel with the PowerShift auto gearbox on 300 miles of motorway driving with lots of stop-start traffic. While performance is all very well, for the majority of Ford C-Max owners the key question is ‘yes but what will it cost me to run? ’ Well, it’s no Porsche but then it’s no solar-powered green machine either. For those inclined to try, the 150hp diesel engine will return more than 60mpg, which isn’t bad, but 13mpg down on the C4 Picasso and 7mpg down on the Renault Scenic.

While it does have good crash test scores, the C-Max also has very few standard safety features. The base model only comes with Ford MyKey and the mandated backup camera. However, it has a good selection of available features, including parallel parking assistance and blind-spot monitors. The C-Max hybrid, as well as the plug-in Energi version, were first released stateside for the 2013 model year.

Apart from its awkward location, the brake pedal has a firm, linear feel. Despite the Ford C-Max’s relatively tidy dimensions, road and wind noise at highway speeds are well contained. The C-Max hybrid powertrain is refined and well-integrated, and the transition from electric power to gasoline operation is practically seamless.

Ford got sued, and ended up lowering the EPA-certified fuel economy of the C-Max hybrid twice and the C-Max Energi once. The C-Max is practical and roomy–a multi-activity-vehicle that had reasonable all-electric range . In many ways, I preferred the C-Max to the Prius when it first hit the market for its interior space management, higher seating position, etc.

I was so amazed by the performance and ride I bought a second one when incentives were so good I couldn’t refuse another. The C-Max received average ratings from both the NHTSA and the IIHS, with the former giving both models four stars overall. The IIHS only tested the C-Max Hybrid, and gave it top marks in all categories except the small frontal overlap test, where it scored an “Acceptable” rating. The models included front and side airbags for both front-seat occupants, side-curtain airbags for the first and second rows, and a driver’s knee airbag. They have the usual array of electronic safety systems, including stability control, traction control, and anti-lock brakes. The Ford C-Max is by no means the class leader when it comes to boot space – in fact at 432 litres it’s about 200 litres short of the Citroen C4 Picasso.

The electric engine goes further per charge, but requires a long refueling time. The hybrid engine refills quickly and can keep you on the road for long stretches of time without long refueling breaks. Despite all this, Ford is committed to electrifying its models by investing 4.5 billion in electric vehicle technology ipca tech days gone by 2020 and will add 13 new electrified models to its lineup. Ford has also confirmed plans to sell two electrified vehicles in China and is working on a 200-mile electric vehicle. Generations are groups of model years where the vehicles are continuously produced, using similar engineering and shared features.

Its layout and design makes the C-MAX versatile enough for commuting or weekend road trips. Theres a 60/40-split rear seat that folds completely flat, creating more room for cargo. However, because of its battery, the C-MAX lacks the trunk space of most gas-powered compact sedans. The hybrid offers a fair 24.5 cubic feet behind the rear seats, yet, the Energi offers a mere 19.2 cubes.

The only downside is that it has some squeaks and noise at first from the dash and from the console overhead. I have taken it to the dealer that I purchased it from and have not had a satisfying experience. I like the car and do not regret purchasing it, I wish dealing with minor warranty problems was smoother and easier to deal with.If you are looking at this car I would recommend it. The C-Max’s interior is comfortable, but it’s a generation behind Ford’s newest offerings in its design, materials, and finishes. The center stack’s layout in particular is beginning to look its age. Power-adjustable cloth seats are standard in the C-Max, but leather-trimmed front seats are standard in Titanium models.
