Hemp pioneer Lawrence Serbin, president and owner of Hemp Traders, has led the development of a new hemp-derived particle board. It’s called CannaBoard and it uses does deloitte drug test hemp fibers and a non-toxic, formaldehyde-free resin as a binder. It can be used anywhere you use particle board, from furniture to subfloors, the company says.

This month I am looking at hemp board which is a very sustainable product because hemp grows very fast, can grow almost anywhere and is biodegradable and totally renewable. It is a plant that can take care of itself and requires little to no chemicals to grow (it was used as a first crop in the 1770’s America to improve the bluegrass country that was unsuitable for grains until after hemp had been first grown on the land). So the cultivation of it doesn’t pollute the water courses such as crops like cotton.

To understand the significant environmental benefits of hemp-based products, it’s best to begin with hemp’s unique growth period. Hemp can go from seed to a ready-to-harvest material in as little as 120 days, making it one of the most rapidly-renewable materials in the world. To put this into perspective, some softwoods can take up to 120 years to create the same amount of usable biomass that a few acres of hemp can produce in 3 months. Depending on where you live, you might be able to find hemp fiberboard in a local hardware store. You can also purchase this material through specialist timber yards, online stores, and wholesalers.

Boards of medium densities were characterised by strengths less than 0.1 N/mm2. A considerable increase in tensile strength was observed when the board density increased to more than 900 kg/m3. However, even in this case the strength of these boards was half of what the standard required for P2 furniture boards. The low quality of the hemp boards can be attributed to deficiencies in establishment of regular adhesion of long fibres, which have a strong tendency to clump into tufts even when a slight airstream is applied.
